COVID-19 Virus

2020-10-08 Here’s what’s new this week:

NOTE:  This is a copy of a text released on the CERN site.  Certain links in the original text only work for persons with a CERN identification, hence these links were removed and text modified accordingly.

In a rapidly evolving situation, the usual channels are being constantly updated, and members of the personnel are strongly encouraged to consult them regularly.

Here’s what’s new this week:

COVID-19 cases at CERN

From the start of the pandemic up to 2 October, the Medical Service has been informed that 43 members of the personnel (MPE and MPA) and 10 contractors / temporary personnel have tested positive for COVID-19. To date, there is no evidence of transmission on-site.

Flu vaccination

CERN is offering a flu vaccination to anyone working on CERN sites (MPE, MPA and contractors). Vaccinations will be available from 15 October to 13 November at four locations on the Meyrin site (Buildings 13, 30, 504 and 510), and one each on the Prévessin site and at LHC point 1 (ATLAS) and LHC point 5 (CMS). The ATLAS and CMS points will be open for two days each: 20 October and 3 November in the case of ATLAS and 28 October and 12 November for CMS. Reservation is mandatory.

Restaurant arrangements

Seating arrangements have been optimised in the three main restaurants to maximise capacity while ensuring two-metre spacing between those who are seated. Labels on each table indicate the maximum seating capacity of the table, and provide links to CERN’s COVID-19 information web site and the Novae Click-and-Collect service.

From Monday 12 October, hot meals will be served in Restaurant 1 for the extended period of 11:00 to 14:30 in order to even out demand. Please avoid the peak time from 12:15 to 13:15 if you can. The hot meal service in restaurants two and three remains unchanged: from 11:30 to 14:00 in Restaurant 2, and from 11:30 to 13:30 in Restaurant 3.

Remember that masks must be worn at all times while not seated and not eating. Please try to limit the time you spend in the restaurants to 30 minutes at peak times to reduce pressure on space.

Don’t forget that Novae has introduced a Click-and-Collect service. You can order and pay for your lunch online any time before 15:00, and collect it the following day from any of the collection points at a time of your choice.

Pressure on space will ease in Restaurant 2 as of 16 October, when the upstairs section of the restaurant re-opens following refurbishment.

If you need advice on restaurant arrangements, dedicated staff are available to help in Restaurant 1 from 11:00 to 14:00. They can be identified by their pink jackets.

Quarantine and self-isolation

Full details of CERN’s approach to quarantine and self-isolation, including the new measures announced yesterday for those arriving/returning from travel to countries/areas considered high risk for COVID-19 infection are available in the new quarantine and self-isolation section of the COVID-19 information website.

Access for retirees and family members

Retirees, including honorary members of the personnel, may not come on-site except for exceptional access to on-site facilities, such as bank safes. Members of the families of CERN personnel may access the Meyrin site only to drop-off and pick-up their children at the Jardin des Particules. Family members may not use the CERN restaurants.

Leave donation

Many thanks to those of you who donated leave. 1077 days were donated by 279 donors. A forthcoming Bulletin article will give full details.

Service desk

As of Monday 12 October, the Service Desk will ensure first line of support for all COVID-19 related questions, forwarding requests to the appropriate services.

Town hall meeting

The recording of today’s update on CERN’s activities will be available here from Friday for those with a CERN login.

Did you know?

CERN has acquired a machine to produce surgical masks to provide for the Organization’s needs. The first samples have been sent to a qualified body for proper certification and CE marking, which will make sure that they have the required performance and allow them to be distributed to personnel through the usual channels. Read more about CERN’s production of surgical masks in the next CERN Bulletin.
