HSE Unit

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to the Stroke awareness campaign on 17 October organised by the Medical Service in collaboration with the Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève (HUG) and several other partners. (See the Bulletin announcement here)

It will be unique opportunity to gather key information and tips from different organisations hosting stands from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m around R1 and the main building foyer.

We also warmly encourage you to register for the lunchtime conference (12 – 1.30 p.m.) at Building 222, which will bring you insights not only on the latest advances in stroke medicine and prevention by experts from the HUG, but also a thought-provoking testimonial by Elise and Louis, both young stroke survivors.

You will find all information about the campaign on https://hse.cern/stroke.

We hope to see many of you there!

Thank you,

A symposium to celebrate Carlo Rubbia’s 90th birthday 18/10/2024

Join on Friday 18 October, as CERN celebrates the 90th birthday of Carlo Rubbia, CERN Director-General from 1989 to 1994.

Carlo Rubbia’s pioneering work on the proton–antiproton project led to the discovery of the W and Z bosons in 1983, earning CERN its first Nobel Prize in 1984. This discovery not only advanced understanding of the fundamental forces of nature through innovative detector and accelerator developments, but also established CERN as a global leader in particle physics, paving the way for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Register now to attend. The event is open to all and registration is required for organisational purposes and to issue CERN access cards for non-CERN attendees.

Lecture “Who is qualified to talk about time” – 15/10

Etienne KLEIN

Tuesday 15/10/2024- 5.30pm
503/1-001 – COUNCIL CHAMBER (cern)

https://indico.cern.ch/event/1452877

The Staff Association is pleased to invite you to the lecture: Who is qualified to talk about time

There’s a paradox surrounding the word time: while it doesn’t give rise to any difficulty when it’s involved in the fast train of an ordinary sentence containing it, it becomes very embarrassing as soon as it’s taken out of circulation to be examined on its own. As soon as it is isolated from the words that surround it, as soon as it is extracted from the verbal flow in which it has been placed, it metamorphoses into enigmas that torment the mind. What exactly is time? she asks herself. Is it a particular substance? Does it exist in itself? Or is it just a secondary entity arising from the relationships between events? Does it depend on us? Is it a product of consciousness?
How can such a familiar word give rise to such difficult questions?

Etienne Klein is a philosopher of science and director of research at the CEA. He heads the ‘Laboratoire de Recherche sur les Sciences de la Matière’ and is a member of the Académie des Technologies.
He is interested in the question of time and other subjects at the crossroads of physics and philosophy. He is also a professor at Centrale-Supélec. He speaks every Friday on France-Culture’s ‘La conversation scientifique’.
